From james.deagle at yahoo.com Tue Sep 1 12:11:44 2009 From: james.deagle at yahoo.com (James Deagle) Date: Tue, 1 Sep 2009 09:11:44 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [ocuug] 9twm (twm with a "Plan 9" theme) Message-ID: <681101.94021.qm@web55304.mail.re4.yahoo.com> Hi all, I've been hacking .twmrc the past few days, and in conjunction with a simple mod to .xinitrc, it is my attempt at making twm impersonate Plan 9 from Bell Labs as much as possible without adding any extra software or widgets other than those native to X. (For example, the .xinitrc lines suggested below use xload in place of stats from Plan 9.) The final result equals the looks and sensibilities of Plan 9, but with the behavior and functionality of twm. One glaring omission on the aesthetics side is Plan 9's big fat pointer arrow. Instead, I've opted for a skinny little thing (draft_small) that is much closer to the root window cursor in 9wm. Another omission is the "Hide" function in the menu. As far as I know, twm doesn't have that trick. (If I'm wrong, then I'm more than happy to stand corrected. I consider myself only an intermediate Unix user, and am still climbing up that learning curve.) For the full text of the "9twm" .twmrc and .xinitrc files, please visit my original post on the topic in the FreeBSD forums. Feel free to try it out and let me know what you think! And then we put it in the cloud so you can access it on virtual Ubuntu desktops anywhere you can access the Internet. Our full solution enables an organization to operate without any proprietary software at all. Much of the software we've integrated is listed at our publicly donated Wiki: http://freeopensourcesoftware.org/ Hope to see you there! Mark your calendars accordingly. That would make this month's meeting Wednesday, Sept 16, 2009. I'll not be attending this one, as I have a conflict and my wife wins. Just as a reminder, next Wednesday (September 16) is the third Wednesday of the month. For those who do not remember, (that's everyone, as this is a change to our schedule) that means the Ottawa-Carleton Unix Users Group gets together for an evening of conversation, beverages and food (not necessarily in that order). It's been a slow turnout, so we are hoping that the change in meeting night's makes a difference. If you have the free time, come out and let us know what's been happening with you. Now in its third year, LEET continues to provide a unique forum for the discussion of threats to the confidentiality of our data, the integrity of digital transactions, and the dependability of the technologies we increasingly rely on. We encourage submissions of papers that focus on the malicious activities themselves (e.g., reconnaissance, exploitation, privilege escalation, rootkit installation, attack), our responses as defenders (e.g., prevention, detection, and mitigation), or the social, political, and economic goals driving these malicious activities and the legal and ethical codes guiding our defensive responses. Topics of interest include but are not limited to: * Infection vectors for malware (worms, viruses, etc.) * Botnets, command, and control channels * Spyware * Operational experience * Forensics * Click fraud * Measurement studies * New threats and related challenges * Boutique and targeted malware * Phishing * Spam * Underground markets * Carding and identity theft * Miscreant counterintelligence * Denial-of-service attacks * Hardware vulnerabilities * Legal issues * The arms race (rootkits, anti?anti-virus, etc.) * New platforms (cellular networks, wireless networks, mobile devices) * Camouflage and detection * Reverse engineering * Vulnerability markets and zero-day economics * Online money laundering * Understanding the enemy * Data collection challenges Paper submissions are due Thursday, February 25, 2010, 11:59 p.m. PST. Submissions guidelines and more information can be a found athttp://www.usenix.org/leet10/cfpa LEET aims to be a true workshop, with the twin goals of fostering the development of preliminary work and helping to unify the broad community of researchers and practitioners who focus on worms, bots, spam, spyware, phishing, DDoS, and the ever-increasing palette of large-scale Internet-based threats. Each author will have 15 minutes to present his or her work, followed by 15 minutes of discussion with the workshop participants. LEET '10 will take place on April 27, 2010, in San Jose, CA, and will be co-located with NSDI '10: http://www.usenix.org/events/nsdi10 We look forward to receiving your submissions!
